Oregano oil - properties, application and dosage

Oregano initially evokes associations with Mediterranean cuisine. Pizza, spaghetti carbonara, lasagne… but that's still not enough. Limiting the use of oregano to the kitchen only seriously diminishes its potential. The healing properties of this plant were already appreciated by the ancient Greeks, with Aristotle and Hippocrates in the front row. Were they right? Let's check - both oregano as a spice and phytotherapeutic agent, but also as a source of valuable oregano oil!

What does oregano look like?

Popular oregano is the common marjoram, found throughout North Africa, Europe and Asia. You can meet her all over the territory of Ireland, where - often uninvited and unexpected - she appears in home gardens. Oregano can be successfully grown on its own as part of a home herbarium. It is a highly branched plant that gives off a strong, characteristic smell. Reaches a height of up to 80 cm.

Oregano - properties:

The first mentions of oregano appear in ancient Greek sources, where it is mentioned that the treatment of diarrhea, rheumatic pains and skin diseases with the help of a lipid is mentioned. The Romans, on the other hand, applied oregano leaves to soothe the bites of scorpions and spiders. The less medical - but certainly equally beneficial - effects of the plant were discovered by medieval people who used it as a protection against witchcraft. Today, pharmacists have reached for oregano, appreciating its benefits. In studies on the action of this plant, conclusions can be found about its antibacterial, antispasmodic and antioxidant properties.

If you are interested in the properties of oregano, be sure to check the properties of basil - a spice which, like oregano, is an important element of Italian cuisine, but also a valuable phytotherapeutic agent.

It is believed that phenolic components such as carvacrol and thymol, also found in thyme, are responsible for the beneficial properties of oregano. Research shows that these ingredients kill bacteria by weakening the integrity of their membranes and cell walls. It is a useful feature in the treatment of bacterial dysbiosis, i.e. disturbance of the balance of the bacterial flora in the intestines. It can occur in abdominal distension, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the digestive system. The use of oregano oil can be a way to kill pathogenic bacteria. What is particularly important, the preparation does not have a negative effect on the level of good bacteria. The best effects are used with the simultaneous use of probiotic therapy.

The practice of use also shows that the herb of the common marl has a positive effect on the secretion of saliva, gastric juice and bile. As a result, it improves the processes of digestion and assimilation of food. It can also be used for indigestion, diarrhea and gastritis. In addition, oregano contains essential oils with a relaxant effect. Thanks to this, the plant may prove to be a help in the contractions of smooth muscles, often found in the digestive system.

Oregano combines antibacterial, antifungal and diastolic properties. In addition, it is able to support the secretion of mucus by the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. The combination of these features makes marigold herb a very useful adjuvant in lung and sinus infections, as well as diseases such as catarrh of the upper respiratory tract or problems with expectoration.

This is because it is believed today that a large proportion of chronic sinus problems are caused by fungal activity, often with bacterial complications.

Research by the US Department of Agriculture has shown oregano's very strong antioxidant properties. This may be due to, inter alia, rosmarinic acid, found in maroon herb. In the entire study, oregano received the highest rating of all the herbs tested.

According to the aforementioned study, the arugula has 42 times stronger antioxidant activity than apples and 4 times stronger than blueberries.

Oregano oil for ringworm

Other studies confirm the high effectiveness of oregano as an antifungal agent. Oregano oil is especially preferred in this context.

Oregano oil is especially dangerous to Candida albicans, a yeast that occurs naturally in the large intestine. Too high levels of this fungus and its getting to other parts of the body causes various diseases. They include, among others blemishes (inflammation of the skin) and infections of the mouth and throat.

How to use oregano oil for ringworm?

You can add it to skin care cosmetics and apply a small amount of oregano oil to the affected areas 1-2 times a day.

The high ability of oregano oil to destroy the extremely infectious parasites Giardia lamblia, popular intestinal lamblia, has been noted. Their action is the most common cause of diarrhea among travelers. Every year, they attack over 200 million people around the world. One study found severe and fatal damage to the structures of the lamblia parasites caused by the action of oregano, especially oregano oil. What's more, oregano oil turned out to be more effective than the commonly used drug.

Significant activity of oregano against Helicobacter pyroli, bacteria which are the main cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers, has also been noted. It is one of the few natural remedies capable of combating this bacterium, the effectiveness of which has been confirmed in research. You can use oregano as a tea for this purpose, but the oil is also perfect. Oregano in oil can be administered to the digestive system, especially as an addition to tea - then add 1-2 drops per cup.
