Natural deodorant - benefits, types and properties of natural deodorants

Deodorant is one of the basic cosmetics used daily by both women and men. It allows you to stay fresh, masks the unpleasant smell of sweat, and reduces discomfort. What is the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, and why should you choose a natural deodorant? Check!

Sweating is a thermoregulatory mechanism designed to maintain a constant body temperature and protect the body from overheating. Sweat is released under the influence of increased temperature, environmental humidity, stress, and physical exertion. Sweat itself does not smell. An unpleasant odor arises only when sweat comes into contact with bacteria on the skin (sweat is an excellent medium for them). Fragrance plays a very important role in social life, therefore, to avoid unpleasant odors, we use deodorants and antiperspirants.

What is the difference between a natural deodorant and an antiperspirant?

The main difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant is their different mechanism of action.

The deodorant is designed to mask the unpleasant smell of sweat. In turn, the main task of an antiperspirant is to prevent the formation of sweat by blocking the orifices of the sweat glands.

Ingredients of antiperspirants have a tightening effect on the orifices of the sweat glands, reducing their diameter, thus making it difficult for sweat to escape to the skin surface. Antiperspirants block the outlets of the sweat glands only at the site of application and until the product is washed off the skin.

How does a natural deodorant work?

Natural deodorant is designed to prevent, mask or neutralize unpleasant sweat odor. The deodorant does not inhibit the secretion of sweat - this is the task of the antiperspirant.

We distinguish the following mechanisms of deodorant action:

  • inhibiting the growth of bacteria,
  • preventing the breakdown of sweat by providing bacteria with a different source of food (e.g. citrate (Triethyl citrate) or chitosan, which is a source of sugars), or by mechanically absorbing (absorbing) sweat,
  • blocking the oxidation of sweat components,
  • masking the smell of sweat.

Deodorants last for several hours. They are recommended for people who have no problem with intense sweating.

Ingredients of natural deodorants

Deodorants neutralize the unpleasant smell of sweat thanks to bactericidal ingredients - preventing the growth of bacteria responsible for the breakdown of sweat and the formation of unpleasant odors. The addition of antioxidant ingredients prevents the oxidation of sweat components.

Deodorants contain fragrances that mask the unpleasant smell of sweat. The deodorant also contains ingredients that mechanically absorb sweat, making it unavailable for bacteria.

The addition of moisturizing, soothing and regenerating ingredients gives the deodorants additional caring properties. The soothing ingredients soothe the skin irritation associated with the depilation of the skin of the armpits.

Potassium alum

Alum, or aluminum-potassium sulphate, is a natural mineral with an antibacterial and astringent effect on the orifices of the sweat glands. After alum is applied to the skin surface, a gel layer is formed under the influence of the physiological pH of the skin, sealing the openings of the sweat glands. The astringent action, typical for antiperspirants, allows you to obtain a 2in1 cosmetic with potassium alum. The 2in1 cosmetic or "hybrid cosmetic" combines deodorizing and antiperspirant properties.

Sodium bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is usually associated with adjusting the pH of a cosmetic or the preparation of effervescent salts or bath balls. It works well in deodorants due to its ability to absorb odors. Additionally, sodium bicarbonate has an astringent and soothing effect.

Natrasorb Bath - tapioca starch

Natrosorb is a natural starch obtained from tapioca in the form of a loose, delicate, soft, white powder. Starch absorbs sweat, keeping you dry. Due to its absorbing properties, Natrasorb is also perfect for the production of natural loose powders, foundations, and dry shampoos.

Micronized zinc oxide

Zinc oxide is a well-known ingredient in mineral color cosmetics, baby rubbing powders and SPF creams. Micronized zinc oxide has a soothing, astringent, antiseptic, matting effect, accelerates the regeneration process of minor skin damage. Used in natural deodorants, it creates a layer that absorbs excess moisture and soothes any skin irritations. Due to the very small particles, micronized zinc oxide does not leave white marks on the skin.

The following are also perfect for natural deodorants:

  • hydrolates and natural plant extracts with bacteriostatic, astringent and soothing properties,
  • essential oils that have antibacterial properties and give the deodorant a pleasant scent.
  • regenerating butters and vegetable oils, used in cream deodrants, which regenerate and give the deodorant a pleasant, creamy texture.

As an ingredient of deodorants, aloe vera gel will be perfect, it has a moisturizing, soothing and soothing effect. Aloe gel has an antioxidant and bacteriostatic effect, regulates the natural microflora of the skin.

Essential oils

Among the essential oils, the ones with the strongest antibacterial properties are used:

Essential oils neutralize the smell of sweat, give a pleasant, natural fragrance.

Hydrolates

In natural deodorants, hydrolates with the following effects are also often used:

  • astringent: witch hazel hydrolate, purse ladan hydrolate, rosemary hydrolate, sage hydrolate, peppermint hydrolate;
  • soothing: cornflower hydrosol, Roman chamomile hydrosol, green tea hydrosol, olive tree hydrosol, apple hydrosol, calendula hydrosol;
  • moisturizing: rose hydrosol, Helichrysum hydrosol, bamboo hydrosol, linden hydrosols, geraniums hydrosols, cucumber hydrosols;
  • antibacterial: lavender hydrolate, neroli hydrolate, juniper hydrolate, eucalyptus hydrolate.

Cosmetic oils and butters

The addition of butters and natural oils means that deodorants not only modify the scent of the skin, but also care for the delicate, often irritated skin of the armpits. In addition, the addition of butters and oils has a positive effect on the distribution of the cosmetic on the skin.

Among the oils, the best ones are:

  • coconut oil has antioxidant, antimicrobial and moisturizing properties. Coconut oil leaves no greasy film, absorbs quickly, improves the glide and spreading of the cosmetic,
  • sweet almond oil - is a light, quickly absorbing oil with a moisturizing effect,
  • prickly pear oil - has a moisturizing and antioxidant effect, dries quickly, does not leave a greasy film on the skin,
  • grape seed oil - moisturizes and softens, is well absorbed by the skin, leaves the skin feeling silky smooth.

In the composition of natural deodorants you will often also find d-panthenol, allantoin, glycerin, hyaluronic acid.

Can a natural deodorant cause allergies?

Essential oils have the greatest sensitizing potential in natural cosmetics. The risk of side effects increases with the concentration of these raw materials in the recipe. People with sensitive skin who decided to make their own DIY deodorant should limit the amount of oils in their formula. It is also always worth doing an allergy test. If the test does not indicate an adverse effect, the cosmetic can be used without fear.

Types of natural deodorants

Natural deodorants come in a variety of forms. Depending on your preferences, you can choose from deodorants stick, ball, spray, gel, cream, or deodorant disposable wipes.

Natural roll-on deodorant

The applicator in the form of a ball allows you to quickly and evenly distribute the product on the skin. For the product to spread efficiently and without problems, the very mass of the cosmetic intended for packaging with an applicator in the form of a ball is in the form of a semi-liquid, slightly thickened gel or emulsion. After application, wait a while for the product to dry completely. Try our recipe Natural Alum Deodorant with Eucalyptus and Neroli.

Natural cream deodorant

Cream deodorant is a form of deodorant that is gaining more and more popularity due to the spreading trend related to care for the environment. Cream deodorants are packed in jars (usually glass) that can be reused after washing and disinfecting.

Cream deodorants contain ingredients that absorb sweat, such as starch, diatomaceous earth, white clay (kaolin) or sodium bicarbonate with moisture-absorbing, antibacterial and odor-neutralizing properties. Cream deodorants also contain caring butters and vegetable oils. They are often anhydrous products, so that it is possible to avoid the use of preservatives, and at the same time reduce the risk of microbial contamination when applying the cosmetic with your fingers.

Natural spray deodorant

The spray deodorant is equipped with an atomizer that sprays the product on the skin in the form of small drops. The smaller the drops are sprayed, the thinner, faster drying layer is formed on the skin, and the application itself is more comfortable. We prepare natural spray deodorants based on hydrolates and distilled water. Test the recipe for Natural Lavender Spray Deodorant, rich in deodorant, antibacterial and antioxidant ingredients that mask the unpleasant smell of sweat.

Natural deodorant for children

There are two types of sweat glands in the human body: apocrine and eccrine. The apocrine glands are located i.a. in the armpits and are activated only in adolescence. Eccrine glands are located on the entire surface of the body and are active from birth, although in young children not yet fully developed.

In adolescence, the use of deodorants in children is absolutely justified. Earlier - there is no such necessity. Sweating in children can be regulated with the help of airy, cotton clothes and proper hygiene.

However, if the parent finds that the problem of sweating is a nuisance for the child, it is definitely better to choose a natural deodorant than a synthetic one, commonly available in drugstores. Potassium alum is a much safer product for a child's skin than aluminum salts used in standard cosmetics that regulate the problem of sweating.

The use of mild deodorants, based on natural, hypoallergenic ingredients, can teach children healthy habits of care and taking care of body hygiene.
