Myrrh oil? What is myrrh?

Myrrh is a resin that comes from a tree called Commiphora myrrh, common in Africa and the Middle East. Myrrh is botanically related to incense, and is one of the most used essential oils in the world.

The myrrh tree is characterized by white flowers, sometimes the tree has very few leaves due to the dry desert conditions where it grows. Sometimes it takes a strange shape due to long droughts and harsh weather conditions.

In order to reach the resin, myrrh tree trunks are cut. The dripping resin is allowed to dry. Dried tears are formed, which are collected and given to the steam distillation process.

Myrrh essential oil is often associated with the smell of smoke depending on harvest and weather conditions, sometimes it is sweet or bitter. The word myrrh comes from the Arabic word "murr" which means bitter.
The essential oil is dark orange in color and has a sticky yellowish consistency. It is widely used as a base for perfumes and other fragrances.

The two main active compounds found in myrrh essential oil are terpenes and sesquiterpenes, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Sesquiterpenes specifically influence our emotional effects on the central brain organ, which helps us stay calm and balance our emotions. Both of these compounds are antibacterial, effective in neoplastic diseases and other therapeutic applications, such as: treatment of hay fever, antiseptic, cleansing, detoxifying, perfect for haemorrhage control as a paste. The Chinese use it in Chinese medicine to this day.
The main use in Egypt for Myrrh oil was used for embalming and Jews while they did anointing during worship services.
In ancient times, the resin of myrrh was burned on coals to release a mysterious spiritual presence in every room during a religious ceremony.
